Prolific alternatives for researchers and participants

Looking for Prolific alternatives? Before comparing Prolific pricing with a quick take, decide whether you need a study with selected participants or a quick first reaction. Prolific runs research studies and AI tasks with audience filters [1]. PennyForYours asks one short question of 5 to 50 UK adults and is open to askers by invitation. If you are comparing sites like Prolific as a participant, check each site’s eligibility and payment terms before joining. Last checked: 7 October 2026.

Sites like Prolific compared

Sites like Prolific cover different sorts of work. The rows below compare the question, the people and the price model, rather than putting unlike response fees side by side.

Best suited toStudies, experiments and AI tasks, including repeat or multi-part work [1]A first reaction to a name, design, image or short message
PeopleParticipants selected with screening and audience filters [1]5 to 50 invited UK adults; demographic targeting is planned, not available
TaskA study or task can live in the researcher's own tool [1]One quick take: choose between options, rate 1 to 5, or give a first impression
Cost to askParticipant reward plus a platform fee [2]Free during early access. At paid launch, from 30p an answer plus 50p a question (launch example)
APIStudy and participant workflows can be run through Prolific's API [3]REST API and MCP server in an invitation-only sandbox; test answers are synthetic

The two platforms price different units of work. A three-minute study with a screened group is not the same purchase as one preference question. Compare the question you need answered before comparing a per-response figure.

Prolific alternatives: when each fits

Choose Prolific if you need a study

Prolific is the better fit when eligibility matters, you need participants from a defined group, or your work involves follow-ups. Its published workflow supports external survey tools, repeat participation and flexible study designs [1]. If your research needs an ethics process or a representative sample, plan that research properly; a quick opinion poll cannot stand in for it.

Choose PennyForYours for a small first check

A founder may have two savings-app names and want to know which sounds safer before paying for design. Ask a neutral question, show the two options without telling people which one you prefer, then read the reasons as well as the split. A 14–6 result among 20 people is a steer, not evidence that the wider UK market agrees. A name test is one use; other research methods may answer the next question.

These are different tasks for participants too. Prolific advertises paid studies now [4]. During PennyForYours early access, answering is unpaid and optional. Answering now does not earn pay later or reserve paid work. Answering is free during early access while we build our founding community. Paid answers start at launch.

Prolific pricing and the cost of a quick take

For someone asking a question

Choose a quick-take format and show a piece of short text or one image. You can place two designs side by side in that image. Invite 5 to 50 UK adults to respond, then review the choice split, one line of why from each person and a short summary. Each answer has a signed receipt listing the checks it passed without identifying the member. See the checks and their limits.

We aim for first answers within about 15 minutes in UK daytime, though early access can be slower. No one can promise that a small pool will contain your customers. If a decision depends on age, location or specialist experience, use a targeted study instead. At paid launch, the asker example is from 30p an answer plus 50p a question. Asking is free during early access.

For someone answering

Apply or use an invitation, then pick questions from the board. You can skip any question. We ask for your own reaction rather than a polished review, and you cannot see other answers before you reply. The answering guide explains the current unpaid phase. Paid answers start at launch; no date has been set.

How PennyForYours works in detail

Is Prolific legit? Checks before you start

Researchers can request early access and try one small question. Start with the decision you need to make, then give people two or three clear options. If you already have an invitation, use its join link. Participants can apply to answer; approval or an invitation is needed during early access.

Read recorded-testing options if you need to watch behaviour, or the UK survey-site guide if you are looking for other participant work. PennyForYours is built in the UK; the story behind it is public. If a comparison detail is unclear, a real person replies.

Your questions, answered

All questions by topic

Is Prolific legit?

Prolific publishes its study process, participant rules and reward model on its official site [1], [2], [4]. Its participant page explains the waitlist and verification before people see tasks. Check the current terms on Prolific itself before joining or planning a study; this comparison does not certify another service.

How much can you earn on Prolific in the UK?

Prolific says researchers must set at least £6 per hour and recommends £9 per hour [2], checked 7 October 2026. Those are rates for study time, not a promise about the number of studies any person receives. Look at each study's time estimate and reward before deciding whether to take it.

How does Prolific pricing work for researchers?

Researchers pay participant rewards plus a platform fee calculated on those rewards [2]. Prolific's official pricing page explains the current rates and VAT treatment. Your final cost depends on the number of participants, the time each study takes and the reward you set, so make a study-level comparison.

What other study platforms can participants try?

Research panels, survey apps and opinion-task sites offer different kinds of work. Read the terms for eligibility, task availability and cash-out before joining. Our UK survey-site guide explains the main differences. PennyForYours currently has optional, unpaid answers; paid work has no start date.

Does PennyForYours replace a targeted Prolific study?

No. PennyForYours currently offers a small pool of UK adults without demographic targeting or multi-part study tools. Use it to notice unclear wording or a strong first preference, then test the important finding with your actual audience. A split among 20 people is too noisy to claim market demand.

When does PennyForYours pay participants?

No date has been set for paid launch. Answering is free during early access while we build our founding community. Paid answers start at launch. Taking part now is optional and unpaid; it gives no entitlement to future paid questions. Read how answering works before applying.
