Thumbnail test: which thumbnail gets the click?

Need a thumbnail test before you publish a cover, listing or video? A thumbnail tester can show which design people notice and why. Compare two images with 5 to 50 verified UK adults. We aim for first answers within about 15 minutes in UK daytime; replies can be slower for now. For YouTube-specific testing, see the YouTube thumbnail test.

We review requests by hand.

Questions for a thumbnail tester

Choose the placement first: a vertical Reels cover, a square podcast tile, a course thumbnail or a product-listing image. Then put two versions for that placement side by side in one image and ask a neutral question.

  • Example: RoomKind compares ‘SMALL ROOM BIG CHANGE’ with ‘MAKE ROOM FEEL BIG’ for a short course cover. Which would you tap?
  • Which podcast cover is easier to recognise at phone size?
  • Looking at these two product images, what would you expect to receive?

A pick-one or first-impression question is available now. The thumbnail checker records one line of reasoning from each person.

What a thumbnail test returns

Illustrative RoomKind example: 14 of 20 choose B, ‘MAKE ROOM FEEL BIG’; six choose A. The example reasons say B is easier to read at small size, while A feels crowded. RoomKind can simplify the next course-cover draft. Read the reasons as well as the split: 20 opinions are a steer, not a forecast of taps, downloads or sales.

Example thumbnail test results: A 6, B 14, with reasons such as “B is clearer” and “A feels busy”

How to use a thumbnail checker

  1. Choose the exact placement you care about, then export both versions at its likely display size. Put them side by side in one PNG, JPEG or WebP image.
  2. Choose a pool of 5 to 50 UK adults and ask one question about that placement. People answer without seeing who asked or how others voted.
  3. Read the split, each one-line reason and the summary. If the result is close, revise one design or swap the positions and ask again.

The Ask page covers other questions. For a live video platform, YouTube thumbnail testing has its own limits and tools.

How PennyForYours works

Which thumbnail is better at a glance?

A creator who designed a podcast tile or shop image knows what it is meant to say. Someone scrolling past sees it at a glance, often very small. An outside view may reveal unreadable type, an unclear subject or a visual that suggests the wrong product. A preference test tells you what this small group noticed; it does not measure platform behaviour. Each answer has a signed receipt showing the checks it passed. See how answers are checked.

Honest limit: This is a mixed group of UK adults, not your followers, subscribers or customers. A stated preference cannot predict clicks, plays or purchases on TikTok, Instagram, Etsy, Shopify or another platform. Compare versions for the same placement: mixing a podcast square with a Reels cover would confuse format with design. Left-right position can also sway a small split.

What thumbnail testing costs

Asking is free during early access. At paid launch, a quick take starts from 30p an answer plus 50p a question (launch example): 20 quick takes would come to about £6.50. You see a quote before asking.

All questions by topic

How do I run a thumbnail test before publishing?

Pick one destination and compare two versions for that slot at realistic display size. Ask which is clearer or which a person would tap, then read the reasons as well as the count. A course cover, podcast tile and product image need different crops, so test each format on its own terms.

Is there a free thumbnail checker?

Asking on PennyForYours is free during early access, by invitation. People tell you which thumbnail they prefer and why; this is an opinion test, not an automated image score. Paid questions will have a quote before you post. There is no set date for paid launch.

Which thumbnail is better, A or B?

Use the split to see the direction, then read why people picked each design. In the illustrative RoomKind course-cover example, B wins 14 to six because its words are easier to read. A close split or mixed reasons are a reason to revise and test again, not to declare a universal winner.

How many people should rate my thumbnail?

Twenty is a useful starting pool for choosing between two designs. Five can give a quick steer; up to 50 gives you more reasons to inspect. These are small, mixed groups, so do not treat the result as a representative audience study or a prediction of taps, plays or purchases.

Can I choose people from my platform or niche?

No. The current pool is 5 to 50 verified adults in the UK without interest or follower targeting. If your cover serves a narrow audience, treat this as a clarity check from a mixed group. Compare it with the behaviour you can later see in your own platform analytics.

How much does a thumbnail test cost?

It is free to ask during early access. The paid-launch example is from 30p an answer plus 50p per question, so 20 quick takes would cost about £6.50. That is an example, and the quote shown before asking will control the actual price.
