ASO testing: app icons, names and screenshots

An app icon may be clear to its designer and puzzling to everyone else. An app name test or icon comparison is one part of ASO testing: show two or three options to verified UK adults before you commit to a store listing. They pick one and say why. We aim for first answers within about 15 minutes in UK daytime; replies may take longer for now.

We review requests by hand.

Questions for ASO A/B testing

Choose a question that a person can answer from a still image, without installing anything.

  • Example: Which TempoTrail icon would you tap, A, B or C?
  • From this screenshot, what would you expect the app to do?
  • Which name fits a running app better: TempoTrail or the alternative?

This is a pretest of a first impression. An ASO A/B testing programme on the store itself measures what actual visitors do; this quick check helps narrow the designs to put there.

What an app icon test returns

Illustrative TempoTrail example: icon A gets ten votes, B gets six and C gets four. In the design example, A is read as clear and active, while C feels busy. That points to A as the next version to try. Ten of 20 is not a decisive market result, and people in this pool are not necessarily the people searching for your app.

Example ASO A/B testing results: A 10, B 6, C 4, with reasons such as “A is clear” and “C feels busy”

How to compare store images

  1. Arrange up to three icons at the size they would appear on a phone screen, in one image.
  2. Ask which one people would tap and select a pool of 5 to 50 UK adults. They answer without your name or other votes in view.
  3. Read the split and the reasons, then revise the icon or run a store experiment with the strongest candidate.

How PennyForYours works

When an app name test helps

The app team knows the symbol's story. A person scanning a row of icons sees a tiny mark with no explanation. Their first reaction can tell you if colour, shape or text is doing the wrong job. Signed receipts list the checks each answer passed; read how the checks work.

Honest limit: This is an image and text check, not a device test or an install. You cannot select a target niche or send people into the app today. A stated tap preference may change in a real store next to rival apps. Use your own store experiment to measure visitor behaviour; phone tests are planned for later.

What ASO testing costs

Asking is free during early access. At paid launch, quick takes start from 30p an answer plus 50p a question (launch example). Twenty quick takes would come to about £6.50. The quote appears before you post.

What is ASO testing?

App store optimisation testing checks whether a listing helps the right people understand and choose an app. A quick reaction to icons, names or screenshots can find confusing options early. The store's own experiment tools measure real visitor behaviour and should decide performance claims.

How do I A/B test an app icon?

Start with two distinct icon candidates at realistic display size and ask which one people would tap. Read their reasons before revising. For a true A/B result, run a controlled experiment in the relevant app store, where visitors make real choices. This page's test is a pretest, not that experiment.

Can an app name test include screenshots?

Yes. Upload one composite image showing two or three screenshot options and ask which explains the app most clearly. Keep text readable at phone size. A first-impression question can reveal what people think the app does before you choose an image for the store listing.

Can people install my beta app?

No. People currently answer from text or one uploaded image. Links, app installs and phone tests are not available in the quick-take format; phone tests are planned for later. If you need someone to complete tasks in a beta, recruit testers through a service built for that purpose.

Does a quick app icon test replace store experiments?

No. It gives reasons from a small pool of UK adults before a listing goes live. It cannot show install rate, search context or what visitors do beside competing apps. Use it to remove a confusing candidate, then judge the final listing with real store data.

What does app store testing cost?

Asking is free during early access. The paid-launch example starts from 30p an answer plus 50p a question; 20 quick takes would be about £6.50. The quote shown before posting will state the actual price. It covers reactions to your uploaded image or text, not app installs or a store experiment.
